The Sunshine Coast Airport Gateway Precinct Master Plan has received approval from Economic Development Queensland, marking a major milestone for one of the region’s key growth projects.

The Gateway Precinct is a core part of the strategy to deliver a modern world-class airport that will unlock significant economic benefits for the region and open up commercial opportunities for the airport as it grows.

Sunshine Coast Airport’s CEO, Chris Mills said the approval marks a major milestone for the airport, paving the way for new development including a hotel, retail expansion and various commercial opportunities.

In addition to the terminal expansion, which is already underway, permitted development will include childcare, medical, shopping and other services which will benefit both the local community and travellers.

“We are pleased to receive the green light for this development which allows us to move into the next stage of planning and delivery.

“The Gateway Precinct will create a welcoming arrival and departure experience with a high- quality public realm that reflects the region’s unique identity – making Sunshine Coast Airport the natural choice for travellers, business and our community.

“It will help to unlock tourism and business opportunities that will attract investment, support regional growth and create jobs for the region.”

Economic Development Queensland CEO, Julian Simmonds said it was clear that the project aligns with the government’s priorities for economic growth and development.

“The approval of the Gateway Master Plan reflects our commitment to supporting developments that deliver strong economic, and community benefits.

“With the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 and a fast-growing population, it is vital the Sunshine Coast develop a world-class airport precinct that connects our community and welcomes visitors.

“We are pleased to work with Sunshine Coast Airport and the broader community in delivering a project that meets the needs of the region today and into the future.”

Member for Maroochydore, Fiona Simpson MP, said approval by EDQ is the next step for the airport’s expansion and will benefit the region as it prepares for 2032.

“This part of the expansion potentially includes short-term accommodation for up to 250 rooms, retail shops, air services and an aviation showroom.

“With additional international flights arriving and departing, the expansion of the airport is vital to ensuring our region remains accessible and competitive with other holiday destinations.

“The airport expansion will continue to drive tourism growth, support local jobs and give businesses the confidence to invest in the region.”

Site preparation works for hotel, commercial and retail sites are set to commence in 2026, and proposals for developments will be sought from interested parties in stages. The domestic terminal expansion, which commenced this year, is due to be completed in 2027.
